As part of efforts to strengthen academic and research collaboration among Iraqi universities, Professor Dr. Fadhel Mohammed Thahir, Dean of Karbala Technical Institute at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, participated in the defense of a doctoral dissertation at the College of Engineering, University of Babylon. The dissertation was presented by PhD candidate Mohammed Jalil Raheem and is titled: “Sustainable Management of Groundwater Systems through Assessing the Potential Impact of Climate Change on the Hydrological Behavior of Surface-Groundwater Interactions.“
The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Kazem Nayef Kazem and included Professor Dr. Fadhel Mohammed Thahir from Karbala Technical Institute, Professor Dr. Nisreen Jasim Hussein, Assistant Professor Dr. Anis Kazem Idris, and Assistant Professor Dr. Hassan Hadi Mahdi from the University of Kufa – College of Engineering. The dissertation was supervised by Professor Dr. Ruqayya Kazem Mohammed.
The study aimed to investigate the potential degradation and stress factors affecting the confined aquifer within the Lower Zab Basin, spanning the provinces of Kirkuk, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah. Utilizing GMS V10.7 software, the research involved the development of a digital groundwater flow model to simulate the behavior of the confined aquifer in the basin.
