The Community Health Technology Department at Karbala Polytechnic College held a discussion seminar titled “Hepatitis C Virus.”
During the seminar, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Khudair Abdul Ridha discussed the types of infections that affect the liver, shedding light on Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). He explained the shape and properties of the virus, its pathogenic nature, and the mechanism of the infection’s transition from an acute to a chronic state. Additionally, he covered the global prevalence rates of the virus, modern diagnostic methods, and how to treat this type of viral infection.
The lecturer also indicated that the danger of the disease lies in the unavailability of a vaccine for the Hepatitis C virus. This is due to its ability to continuously change its antigens and evade the immune system, which may lead to the progression of the disease to liver cirrhosis in 20–40% of cases, and it may develop into liver cancer in 4–5% of cases.
The seminar witnessed the attendance of a number of department staff, who enriched the session with interventions and questions, confirming the importance of such events in raising the level of health awareness and disease prevention.
