In a significant step toward promoting innovation and sustainability, students from the Department of Renewable Energy Technologies at Karbala Technical Institute, one of the formations of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, in collaboration with faculty members, have successfully completed an outstanding applied project for wind-powered electricity generation.
The project involved the design and installation of a vertical-axis wind turbine with a maximum capacity of 2.1 kilowatts. It was mounted on the roof of the department’s building following a thorough analytical study of wind speeds at the site to ensure optimal operational efficiency. The project was implemented under the direct supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Hakim Tartib Kazem, and went through integrated phases including design, installation, operation, and performance evaluation.
Serving as a practical training environment, the initiative significantly enhanced students’ skills in mechanical design, control systems, electronics, and renewable energy. It emphasized problem-solving, teamwork, and the practical application of theoretical knowledge.
Operational results demonstrated high efficiency, with the system successfully supplying the department’s batteries with sufficient energy to power various devices and loads. This achievement contributed to increased energy autonomy within the building. The project also lays the groundwork for future hybrid systems that integrate wind and solar energy, aiming to secure sustainable power supplies for laboratories and educational facilities.
This achievement reflects the department’s commitment to steering graduation projects toward community service and labor market needs. It marks a promising step toward a future built on clean and reliable energy sources.
